Getting connected in UAE

Don’t have wifi at home? If you’ve recently moved to Dubai and are trying to figure out how to get connected, look no further. We have gathered all the information you need to get yourself connected in Dubai.

What providers are available?

The UAE has two prominent telecommunications companies: Etisalat and Du, that offer a variety of internet packages as well as a home phone set up, which provides a range of services, including international calls.

Choosing a provider comes down to the best offer available at the time that meets your needs. Some buildings only work with one provider. Therefore, ensure to check with your agent or building maintenance team first.

How do you get connected?

You can visit your provider’s office or apply for the service online by filling out the application form.

What documents/personal details do I need to provide?

To set up your internet, all you need is your original Emirates ID; however, if you do not have this, you will require the following:

• Ejari-registered tenancy contract or title deed with name and physical address.
• Passport including residence visa (original and copy)

How much does it cost?

A basic home internet package in Dubai costs upwards of AED 300 per month. However, your monthly price will depend on your provider, what requirements you have and what packages are available at the time of purchase.

Setting up fees range between 100 and 200 AED while shifting your connection to another location will cost you AED 150.

How soon will the service be activated?

Regarding your internet connection, completing the paperwork and getting the connection setup can take up to 7 working days; therefore, ensure you submit the request at least a week before your move-in date.

Blocked content on the internet

In Dubai, all web pages route through Emirates Proxy, which means you will not have access to all sites. Any offensive or government related websites will be blocked. Social platforms like WhatsApp, Facetime, Skype, Instagram and Snapchat are legalised, however, video and audio calling facilities have been blocked.

Post box

The UAE doesn’t have a regular postal delivery service and instead uses PO Boxes. Register online for a private PO Box through Emirates Post (epg.gov.ae) and select from a number of options, including mail collection from your own box in the nearest post office, through to twice-weekly mail delivery to your home (villas in selected areas only). Or, have your post sent to your work PO Box. Suitable for letters and small packages at annual fees ranging from AED 250–1,250.
