Yet, despite the city’s love for animals, owning a pet in Dubai, in particular a cat or a dog can be a challenge. Large metropolitan cities can be tough on both owners and pets alike.

Dubai Municipality on Pet Ownership

We have tried to give you an abridged version of the city’s municipal codes concerning pets:

• In Dubai, cats and dogs must be vaccinated and micro-chipped before registering with the municipality.
• Cats and dogs must wear their municipality ID disc on their collars at all times.
• Pets without a municipality disc are treated as stray and are impounded. As per rule, animals that remain unclaimed for eight days are either re-homed or put to sleep.
• Cats and dogs must be vaccinated annually.
• When out, dogs need to be kept on a lead at all times.
• Be careful, it is illegal to sell animals in Dubai, without a licensed permission. Pets offered on notice boards must say “Free” or “Free of charge”.
