There are a lot of things to sort out when you’re moving in to a new home. Usually, you would be stressed from packing and moving things out of your previous place; and then unpacking and arranging everything to set up your new home. But all this definitely cannot be done without a thorough clean up session.
This simple tip will help you organise your move-in seamlessly. When packing your things, always consider what you would want in each room.
Sort out items as per the room they belong to, and pack them together. Label these boxes clearly with the room names, and drop them off in the corresponding rooms during the move. This reduces clutter from the get-go, which means you only have the items you need in each room.
Packing and labeling can be a little more time-consuming than just throwing everything in boxes as you go along, but will save you time in the long run. It’ll also reduce your stress when unpacking, avoiding a “which box is the frying pan in?!” moment.
Even if the previous resident has cleaned the property, you won’t really know how well it has been done. The house might look clean, but most people usually just clean away the dust. They don’t necessarily sterilize the surfaces or pay attention to details.
Before you start with the cleaning session, plan it out well. You need to think about the home as a whole, as well as individual rooms. Which room will you start with? How big are the rooms? How dirty is each one? Estimate the amount of time you will take to clean each room, and the order you’ll tackle them in.
Our top tips: start with the bedroom(s) and kitchen, since you’ll need to use them right away. Allocate more time to the bathroom, as it needs thorough cleaning. After all, you don’t want to get inside a half-cleaned bathroom!
While cleaning, start at the top and work your way down, to prevent dirt falling from above and ruining your cleaning efforts. Don’t start in the middle of the room – start with one corner and go around the room to ensure you don’t miss anything.
Always finish cleaning one room before moving on to the next one, so you can see the results and find motivation to clean the next.
Unpack your boxes (which are well organised- thanks to our first tip!) and arrange the room as soon as you’re done with cleaning. You’ll have a better overview of how the room looks and fewer boxes to deal with. You’ll also start to feel at home much faster once the space is filled with your belongings.
Start living in your new home the right way, by paying attention to detail when cleaning it. If you leave that carpet stain for now, its unlikely that once you get busy, you’ll notice it again. And once you’re used to it, cleaning it is never going to happen.
Before you unpack, take advantage of the empty space and make sure its cleaned properly. Once you’ve arranged your furniture, it’ll be twice as hard to move it around, and clean those hard-to-reach spots. So give them some attention now while you have the chance.
There are many areas around the house that need special attention. Make sure to clean the door knobs, window handles, light switches, and taps. These places are highly contaminated as everyone touches them all the time, but they’re normally overlooked when cleaning. The areas between tiles are important too. Mold tends to form here and needs to be cleaned, to avoid it from spreading. Pipes are often covered with dust and dirt, so are worth the effort to clean up.
Put these top tips to use, and enjoy a fresh, clean start to your life in your new home. With a bit of planning, careful cleaning, and plenty of elbow grease, your home will sparkle from top to bottom, from day one.
