Find Dubai’s Cultural Offerings in Barsha

Al Barsha is the home of the Mall of the Emirates, which is, in turn, the home of DUCTAC, (Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre) – a hub of theatre, music, film and other visual art disciplines. Neighbouring Al Quoz has a fine reputation for art galleries and Gulf Photo Plus, a photography school, resource and gallery rolled into one, is located in Alserkal Avenue, a location which, while it may look unprepossessing from the outside, is home to 20 art spaces in total and is a hub of creativity in an otherwise industrial area.

DUCTAC is a cultural hub in its own right, with regular theatrical performances, many of them specifically aimed at children. For example, a stage adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson’s much loved book Hetty Feather will open on 14th May. The centre is also a regular performance space for amateur theatrical collective the Dubai Drama Group, whose recent productions have included Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Upcoming events at the centre include The Sharmila Dance Extravaganza, from 24th April – a performance by 200 young professional and aspiring dancers, and Luma – Art in Film, a selection of art and films by a range of artists, which runs until 29th April.

Back in Alserkal Avenue is The Fridge Dubai, a music management agency which hosts regular concert series, and holds an online roster of where you can see the numerous musicians on its books performing. There is also A4 space – a hub for freelancers to meet, work and be inspired, as well as a number of art galleries including The Green Art Gallery and the Salsali Private Museum.

Apartments are available in Barsha, but, because of the district’s extremely convenient location and relatively affordable prices, they are increasingly difficult to come by. A one bedroom apartment will set you back a bare minimum of AED 70,000 per annum. If your account for the space available, villas are also a relatively affordable option, with a five bedroom 3,236 sq. ft. property in a compound with the communal pool being offered for AED 240,000. Big spenders will want to check out an 8,000 sq. ft. villa, currently under construction with private pool, offered for AED 600,000 per annum. Buying property in Al Barsha also does not come cheap. A five bedroom 11,500 sq. ft. property with a beautiful landscaped garden is offered for sale for AED 9.3 million.
